However, they may have to pay the list price if they are uninsured or have not yet hit their annual deductible. Eli Lilly on Tuesday said its highly popular drug used for weight loss and diabetes showed promise as a treatment for fatty liver disease in a mid-stage trial. The condition is characterized by excess fat build-up and inflammation in the liver and can lead to liver scarring, also known as fibrosis. The trial followed around 190 adults with MASH with severe stages of liver scarring, Eli Lilly executives said on an earnings call Tuesday. It was less clear how much the drug reduced liver scarring, which was the second aim of the trial. Eli Lilly is "equally encouraged" by tirzepatide's results in reducing liver scarring, the company's chief scientific officer Dan Skovronsky said on the call.

Pfizer shares sank Friday when the drugmaker said it would abandon a twice-daily obesity treatment after more than half the patients in a clinical trial stopped taking it. But Novo and Pfizer are also trying to develop pill versions that would be easier for patients to take. Pfizer said it saw patient discontinuation rates topping 50% across all doses in a mid-stage study of twice-daily danuglipron. It ranged from nearly 7% to more than 11% in patients taking the pills. By comparison, obese patients without diabetes lost about 18% of their weight compared to a placebo when taking taking Eli Lilly’s Zepbound in late-stage research.

On Thursday, Novo Nordisk, the Denmark-based company behind Ozempic and Wegovy, reported a 29% increase in sales to $8.4 billion for the third quarter. The pharmaceutical companies are two of the biggest beneficiaries of the recent weight-loss drug frenzy, with Novo Nordisk catapulting to Europe’s most valuable company in September. Novo Nordisk reported that its obesity care sales grew 174% in the first nine months of 2023, mainly driven by US demand. (Reuters) -Eli Lilly and Co on Wednesday appointed a new chief for its diabetes and obesity unit in a string of leadership changes ahead of a key regulatory decision on the use of its potential blockbuster drug Mounjaro as a weight-loss treatment. In his new role, Jonsson will oversee Lilly’s launched products and late-stage development of diabetes and obesity treatments, including tirzepatide and other candidates such as its next-generation obesity drug retatrutide and obesity pill orforglipron. Mason, who has also spent more than three decades with Lilly, oversaw the late-stage development and the launch of Mounjaro. The diabetes drug, which clocked in sales of $979.7 million in the latest quarter, belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1s that stimulate insulin production.

(Reuters) -Eli Lilly and Co will buy Point Biopharma Global for $1.4 billion, the companies said on Tuesday, gaining access to experimental therapies that enable precise targeting of cancer. Lilly has offered $12.50 per Point Biopharma share held, representing a premium of about 87% to the stock’s last close. Shares of Indiana-based Point Biopharma soared 85%, while Lilly’s stock was down about 3%. Point Biopharma has licensed both its late-stage experimental therapies to Lantheus Holdings since 2022. A Lantheus spokesperson said the company’s commercial rights remain intact and its collaboration with Point Biopharma is progressing in line with expectations.
